Cold weather vibration / noise / power reduction?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar and has any hints as to diagnosis steps, ways to fix it, whatever...

My TC Max runs nicely most of the time. However, on very cold days I notice as I put the power on that it's ok at low power but as I twist more the motor (?) starts making a fair bit more noise. When this is happening the acceleration is much worse, and you can feel the vibrations through the whole bike while the battery drains a bit faster than normal. I'm not certain it's the motor but seems the most likely candidate. It happens even from initial departure from home, when the bike itself should be reasonably warm as it's stored indoors which also confuses me. It could just be chance that it happens on cold days but it's the only common aspect I've noticed to when it happens vs when it runs fine.

I'll try to talk to the super soco dealer in my area, but they've not got a great track record with any kind of bike nor are they who I bought it from (they didn't sell it when I ordered, so I got Avon to deliver even though they're very far away!)

Any thoughts more than welcome, it's my first bike so I could easily be missing something obvious 🙁

cold can do all sorts of things, from causing metals to contract (can make bolts tighter), to reducing the effective capacity of lithium batteries

it is possible that a small change in a metal part could tighten something up and cause a vibration

or it could be that the bike is having trouble supplying the current needed for the motor - I haven't been able to get the technical specs from Bosch (for some reason they refuse to share basic information), but it is likely to using a Pulse Wave Modulation of some kind, which provides pulses of current at different frequencies; if those pulses are slowed down or not high enough current, vibrations could be possible (usually more of a hum, but can translate thru the frame as vibration)

 

this is purely speculative, hopefully you can get a better answer from a vmoto dealer - if not, tracking down the exact source of the vibration might give a glue (if you can raise the back wheel up, and run it, do you still get the vibration?

 

the cold can cause lithium to discharge more quickly, but also if something is causing friction on the hub motor, this would also result in a faster discharge rate, aswell as, potentially, vibrations

Cool thanks, I'll have a go and see if i can get a bit more info before going near the dealers, slightly tricky to surface as it seems to happen under load so I suspect it'll not be present with the rear wheel lifted. Still worth a go though! 😀 I'll update if I find anything of interest.

Seem to be a good few posts of people in cold climates not having trouble so doesn't seem a common issue at least thankfully 🙂 gives me hope.

@moose Did you get the vibration issue resolved? I'm also getting vibration underload. Any info would be a great help. Cheers
